As there are no quick wins (at least in white-hat SEO) we as SEOs are always looking to be ahead of the curve as far as anticipating where Google will place emphasis according to its algorithms.  For example, before Google had publically stated that they were using Social Media metrics heavily in their ranking factors, we had tested and deduced (as did many other savvy SEOs) that these resources did have SEO benefit.  Although it would now appear obvious given the tremendous popularity of Social Media sites that they should have some impact on search it wasn't exactly a given.  It does take some foresight to be able to implement these things with some certainty before they become public knowledge.

If you don't have the forecasting abilities that others may be bestowed with, there are other areas to place your efforts.

Instead of always trying to anticipate the next big thing try instead to provide your audience with information that your research has shown they really enjoy.

Google has of late placed a huge emphasis on the inherent trust factors of websites and the user experience while on a website. Getting wrapped up in link-building or getting 500 Facebook friends can cause you to lose sight of the reason your business exists- to be a quality provider of the products or services you offer.  It is my belief that the companies that have 500 Facebook friends and numerous natural links being built to them are companies that go out of their way to be customer oriented.

Think of ways you can impress your customers on your website beyond traditional means.  Really involve them in your business and show them you care about their opinion.  This will build trust and establish you as an authority in your industry as the company who really cares.  Sometimes amidst all these ranking factors we lose sight that our customers are the reason we are in business in the first place.  Cater your website to them the best way you can and you will win.
